ESMR Fellowships
The EMC 2010 Scientific Committee was impressed not only by the quantity (almost sixty) but also by the overall quality of the candidates for the Young ESMR Scientist Support Fellowships. The choice was extremely difficult and congratulations must go to one and all! To those who did not receive a fellowship, we would like to express our strongest encouragement in careers that already appear very promising -- we look forward to seeing more of your work at future EMCs.
And the lucky winners are...
Siobhan Lisa Anton · Oslo, Norway
Akshay Bareja · Oxford, United Kingdom
Sukriti Dewan · Chicago, USA
Dawit Gonçalves · Ribeirão Preto, Brazil
Lars Hvid · Odense, Denmark
Vsevolod Kurushin · Moscow, Russian Federation
Stephan Lange · La Jolla, United States
Filippo Macaluso · Stellenbosch, South Africa
Malin Persson · Kalmar, Sweden
Marita Wallace · Burwood, Australia
See you all in September!
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to inform you that the XXXIX European Muscle Conference (EMC 2010) will take place on September 11-15, 2010 in Padua, Italy.
The conference aims to provide the annual occasion for an interdisciplinary meeting of scientists with different expertise and background, working on striated and smooth muscles. The community of myologists active in Padua is happy to host its colleagues from all over Europe, as well as from outside the continent.
The scientific programme will be enriched by a Journal of Physiology Symposium entitled Reactive oxygen/nitrogen species in skeletal muscle—acute and long-term effects.
We are certain that the long lasting tradition of EMC meetings and the excellent quality of the scientific committee will encourage you to attend this Conference. Registrations will open 1 April 2010.
We look forward to welcoming you in Padua next September.

Reactive oxygen/nitrogen species in skeletal muscle—acute and long-term effects
The symposium will deal with the acute and chronic effects of ROS and RNS on muscle structure and function. It will consider how free radicals can affect intracellular signalling pathways and can determine muscle wasting in ageing and in chronic non-muscle diseases, as well as following exercise training, disuse, and hypoxia.
The oxidative stress and muscle topics have attracted a lot of interest in the last years. A rough indication of its relevance can be gleaned by searching PubMed for "skeletal muscle" AND "oxidative stress": the number of references have been around 200 per year in the last 3 years, and 150 for the two preceding years.
